Is A Dark Tooth Dead?

There are many possible reasons for a tooth to turn dark. The most common cause is from trauma.

If a trauma occurs somewhere in your body, you'll find a bruise on it the next day. This is caused by the rupturing of red blood cells that shows through the skin. But the trauma occurs to a tooth, the red blood cells inside the tooth rupture but the discoloration takes a lot longer to show up, since the tooth is so dense.

Once the discoloration occurs inside the tooth, it doesn't go away - unlike a bruise to the skin. Often this type of trauma to a tooth will be enough to permanently damage the nerve and leave it "dead."

If you suspect you may have a dead tooth, contact our office and we can help check to see if it is really dead and discuss your options. It is dangerous to ignore a dead tooth and may jeopardize your health!
