Updating To Tooth Colored Fillings From Metal Fillings
There are many reasons why patients ask us to replace their "silver" fillings with tooth colored ones. Some of the common reasons include esthetic and health concerns.
A tooth colored or resin composite filling looks more natural and actually bonds with the tooth structure and seals the margins closed from bacterial invasion. The tooth can be treated much more conservatively and thus maintain the maximum amount of original tooth structure as possible
Silver fillings require drilling undress out of the tooth in order to retain the restoration since it is not bonded directly to the tooth. These undercuts may weaken the tooth in larger fillings and predispose the tooth to subsequent fracture in the future.
Composites with their opportunity to be conservative and applying their adhesive characteristics can reinforce and guard against fracture. So if our patient requires a filling, we believe that composite restorations are in the besat interest of the patient.
