Veneers

A veneer is an artificial covering over the front of your natural tooth. They can be made directly onto your existing tooth, which is often called "bonding" or they may be made at a dental laboratory out of porcelain, which is what most people are referring to when they say "veneers." Of the porcelain type of veneers there are two main categories. One is minimal or no prep veneers in which either very little or none or your natural enamel is removed before the veneers are constructed. The other type of veneers require "numbing" of the teeth and removal of more enamel before the veneers are made. The choice of which technique to use depends on numerous factors some of which follow. First, to use the no prep technique you need to have fairly straight teeth to begin with or the veneers will reflect the crookedness of your natural teeth. Also for no prep veneers your teeth should not be too dark or their darkness will tend to show through the thin porcelain.

So in general if your teeth are crooked and dark you may want to choose prepared veneers to create alignment of the teeth and a lighter color. Many of our patients, with good reason, don't want to grind away their enamel and instead choose to lighten their teeth with Zoom! and then use Invisalign before having their veneers made so that preparation can be avoided.

We have created thousands of veneers of all the varieties listed and would be happy to discuss which type would be best for you.
