Caring for Your Teeth While On Braces

Orthodontic treatments like dental braces can align your bite, maximize your teeth's effectiveness in performing their functions and create a well-aligned smile. Today's orthodontics involves repositioning of the teeth and underlying roots, providing better support for the crown of the tooth

However, you may find that brushing your teeth while on braces may be a challenge since it requires extra effort to clean your teeth. Here are some tips to help you care for your teeth while on braces.

1. Avoid trying to brush all of your teeth at once. Brush a couple of teeth at a time. Use small circular motions for at least 10 circles. The biting surfaces of your upper and lower teeth should be brushed using a back and forth motion.

2. Don't rush and make sure any areas that may have been missed are checked and re-brushed. Brush after every meal and before going to bed.

3. Choose a soft toothbrush that's gentle on gums but is strong enough to clean around the metal brackets. Pick a toothpaste that will cut through food that's hardened behind the braces but avoid using whitening toothpaste.

4. Your toothbrush can wear out quickly when using braces so it's best to replace it every three months.
